Promotion and Relegation is vital for Football in Australia

"While I think it's gone silly now adding old clubs completely defeats the purpose of why the A-League was created in the first place."

You're very right regarding this.
That's why I'm of the belief the AL can be its own standalone comp as is now and the AC can do whatever the hell it likes.

...totally unsuitable for top flight football... uuggghhh such a brain dead take, Lakeside has hosted top flight football before (Women's A-League games) looked great on TV its on YouTube. If you don't like South thats fine not many people do, but to say that Lakeside is "totally unsuitable for top flight football" considering the reputation of a-league stadiums being to big and crowds looking tiny because of that... have a think for more than five minutes mate
Lakeside IS unsuitable for top flight football.

Who wants to be a billion miles away from the action because there's an athletics track between the field and the fence.

You're right about one thing, yes I don't like South at all, their fans are incredibly arrogant who believe they have a divine right to be in the top flight.

The two individuals interviewed in the pod are exactly the kind of arrogance I refer to.

Look man I don't know how to tell you this but... never mind, yes having an athletics track is a slight deterrent (for some) but thinking for more than 10 seconds gets you far in life.

Curious have you actually ever been to Lakeside or a Football Stadium with a running track around it? Im pretty sure many Bundesliga teams do...
Can the track be removed and the pitch brought closer to the stand? Surely a running track can go somewhere else. Or is there a deal involved here?

The athletics track was laid in 2011 in front of the existing football grandstand, due to relocation of athletics from Olympic Park, following the venue’s demolition... and how was it done... collingwood needed a training venue, so a certain E McGuire surprise surprise became head of athletics vic (for just enough time) and with the then state governement worked out a deal that suited his team and screw everyone else!!
Can it be removed now? Id argue no bc of (a) the deal in place and (b) the lack of any other apprpriate venue to host a track.

Maguire's name seems to keep popping up when it comes to screwing soccer. But he'll suck off the NFL now his boy is playing with them.

Wasn't there a meeting of powerful scum about 20 years ago lead by Eddie, telling the room that they need to bury soccer for the good of everyone else?

Tis tis mate... shoudlve just started there and saved yourself the needless typing!
If any franchise used lakeside stadium you would find it suitable, like u did MV at marvel and SFc at cricket grounds.. simple as that!

I'm not calling for a false unity - there are big divides in the game that can't be fixed just with a kombayah session - but issues like this are why there needs to be at least some steps towards unity. Ideally A league fans call out decisions like this and fans of traditional clubs call out when a league supporters are demonized in the media etc. Probably a lot of issues like this where we are stronger together

You wont find any real proponent of the game that will argue against that... Problem is can the right choices be made to appease both sides enough to be able to find that needed common ground?
I mean from an anti aleague perspective i will accept nothing short of a realistic timeline to pro/rel for all .. the rest in the meantime i can be patient on and even united to some level...as long as we seeing small.steps of progress.
Problem is that that common ground is harder to be found when we continually deal with the same lies and propaganda that comes out of the woodwork everytime their "exclusiveness" is threatened!
Just look at the overwhelming propagand a in the last few days!

I could care less what Victory do but I will add where else were they supposed to play the big games back in those days that AAMI was a total sellout in 5 seconds.

It's not really Victory's fault they are based in a city that is completely and utterly obsessed with a code that plays its game on a cricket field.

How many other rectangular fields are there in Melbourne that held over 40K-50K, none nada zippo.

Who gives a fuck about overseas venues?

This discussion is about Australia and its a well known fact that Australians of fans of rectangular field sports do not like venues like that.

It's why people in Sydney constantly bitch and moan about Stadium Australia as that place is a billion miles away from the action due to the fact it once had an athletics track to host the 2000 Sydney Olympics and to appease the Victorian AFL boffins who wanted it for their game despite the fact most Swans fans hated going there.

Tqlking, just for the sake of talking, except your facts are skewed again bc only major matches had high crowds even then and most couldve been held at the rectangular venue but werent bc of the deal in place..,tis tis, I suggest you do you research properly next time and talk to me when you can show me 1 purpose built SOLELY for football venue anywhere in this country that meets your standards!

The bottom levels at the former Olympic stadium are quite reasonable. The upper levels were unable to be moved. The only change made to accommodate AFL (which they paid for by the way) was to keep the equipment that moved the lower bowl side seating back out. It's somewhat compromised by being a former Athletics track (an athletics track no longer fits in by the way) but athletic tracks have straight sided stands compared to cricket grounds where the side seating is further away. There is no doubt a dedicated rectangular stadium is best, followed by a converted athletics stadium (quality varies by the conversion and when it was done) and then a cricket ground. I've attached a couple of shots of variation of Stadium Australia, The WWC final from the second back row and the NRL Grand Final from $750 seats.

Marvel stadium is way worse than Lakeside as far as viewing is concerned. The only reason Marvel doesnt get ridiculed as much as Lakeside is because its all grass from the pitch to the stands instead of an athletics track, but its still further away.

I disagree with the notion that Lakeside is unsuitable. It was suitable enough that Western United were desperate to land it a few years back.

Would i prefer the stadium as it was pre redevelopment? Of course, it was a beautiful rectangular stadium, but the reality is ths club was never going to have its lease renewed with its top flight status gone.

The only way the venue would have remained in tact as a purpose built football stadium was if South got the 2nd Victorian A league license, once that license went to Heart, the stadium as we knew it was going to go with it.

Promotion can work if you have a situation where the bottom team of AC play the winners of their state and the winners of the NPL national championship play the bottom of their state in the AC.

That way everyone is satisfied.

Could work. The first one definitely does. Second one, not some much, otherwise we get a situation like 1979

That is the one fact that really gets my goat sometimes.... Criticism of Lakeside is that it has an athletics track but it WAS a perfect little boutique rectangular stadium and could have been scaled up all it needed was seating on the far side and a roof..... Athletics Victoria swooped in because we where a nobody State league club at the time... if we were in the A league they wouldnt have been able to, no matter how much Eddy jumped up and down... You all piss and moan about infrastructure but FFA "lost" Lakeside ... not just South.
