A-League Mens 24/25 - Round 1

I honestly don't get it. It's a nonsense comp that means nothing. I don't bag anyone who enjoys it though, I just quietly think less of them hahaha. I'm a test cricket and 50 over World Cup fan.
maybe its an age thing :)
I use to luv watching ODI, the original One Day cricket introduced was epic viewing, probably being the first time and the Packer circus.
Especially the gen of the players at the time, icons, leaders, legends, it was brilliant entertainment.
Then once these other cash grabbing formats evovled I walked, don't bother watching any pijama cricket since.
Its BS.
I still am fascinated with Test's though, Ash's is iconic - I get the boredom for some as mentioned but I'm also a massive golf viewer and thats probably even more boring for many :)

In fairness though mate, that 3mill will have a tidy ROI, I am NOT a big bash fan by ANY stretch of the imagination
Well.. considering between AFL and Big Bash, the ACT Government is essentially going to be spending (if they have their way) $6m annually on 5 games of Big Bash League (I'm being generous and adding one more home game because it would be an expansion apparently), and 3 games of AFL.

Compared to :
  • $1.2 million committed for an A-League team (providing 13 games during a time of the year the stadium here is normally not used)
  • $2.6 million for Canberra Raiders (12 home games, I believe? But this also does include the NRLW component)
  • $1.78 million for ACT Brumbies (I believe 7 games per season - not sure if this includes the Women's Rugby component)
Mind you, the stadium to host AFL/Big Bash is located in the heartland of his electorate, with next to zero parking, yet keeps receiving minor upgrades (at the expense of the rectangular stadium that rarely is touched and is expected to be used by 3 full time teams..)

The question they will be answering though is is that 5 games of big bash going to bring in a big bag of cash from spectators, interstate visitors and tv revenue compared to other "spends" ... Ill be in Canberra later this week, will try and note any "football" paraphernalia in the streets.

Absolutely. The 90s to early 00s were epic. I think my love for it faded when Warney finished up, he was THE MAN. He had everything, the highest sporting intelligence, the highest sporting skill, and unbelievable charisma haha. I just can't take to today's cricketers, there's no genius. Although, Maxwell gets me watching. And yeah I always tune in for the Ashes.

I can already tell you now it's zero - even with ALW kicking off (in Melbourne for us).

Pity there's no game for us to enjoy while you're here!

Yep, that's about the same for me. I remember the 2007 summer, finished school for the year, and actually watched full test matches.

I struggle now to even watch T20 games. Cricket - to me - has really suffered from the overcommercialisation of sport in the modern era, with games almost meaning nothing.

I do commend the ICC on adding a World Test Championship though.

I didn't realise Big Bash only starts in December and lasts one month! I really thought it was longer.

Cricket Australia thought they were onto a good thing and overcooked it by dragging out till mid-February. I always wondered if the BBL novelty would still be alive if they kept it to a short, sharp 25 day comp. But from an AL POV, I am glad they fucked it up

Yep maybe an age thing too, but I only watch the test cricket, not any other forms, love my golf & of course my A-League, great start to season LFC.

I doubt it - they only have 2 games at a 12,000 seat venue at an event predominantly attended by Canberrans, they may bring 8000 across the two games from interstate. Then they venue hire, police, security and a myriad of other game day costs. The ACT may make some money of the interstate visitors but it will be by no means a cash bonanza.

You are sounding like the old people did, when 50 overs cricket started.
50 overs ODI is boring as fuck these days. The first and last ten can be exciting, but the middle 30 is shite.

First time I was simply unaware that the season had started.
How can you be someone who says he is a football supporter, but not know when the season starts ? Fuck off with the marketing shite, i don't know any other country that needs to market their league.

All news these days is at your finger tips.

Yeah I think ODI has had its day... pun intended.

It's only the 50 over World Cup that has any meaning in the short forms of the game.

"No one is a fan of the a league they are a fan of clubs". For better or worse a lot of us (at least on 442) are fans of the a league rather than fans of clubs. Id like to be a fan of a club too, but never really connected with one

Yeah that was a weird comment. There are stacks of just A-League fans and Aus football fans.

I suppose fans like me are so rusted on they aren't worth worrying about

they could make every one play in storm trooper costumes, have phil gould the commentator, have the half time entertainment being police beating up active supporters while someone shouts obceneties about ethnics and I'd probably still keep watching to see if there are any future socceroos to look out for. Of course I'd like to be a fan for a club, but its a hard thing to manufacture
