I suppose the point is that it doesn't affect the product long term. However, big teams that have big owners should be looking at owning their own infrastructure. Ultimately it will lower costs and provide additional match day revenue streams while also providing an infrastructure that can generate non match day revenue. This is how NPL clubs survive. Sure - it may be on a grander scale - but if they are truly big clubs that is the way to go.

e.g. CFG should not be using AAMI except for large games - they should have their own smaller (but expandable) stadium.

Makes me wonder how far this could go

like would the clubs keep going if they randomly doubled the salary floor haha

You have kind of answered your own question. Leagues you are talking about have clubs that own all their infrastructure. We don't. Look at the Roar for example. Don't think we own anything of our own. Constantly paying rent and fees to others beyond the basic football costs.

People will still play football, but the quality will be affected.

Professional would be full time. As in football is their job, no need to find a 2nd income. Constantly losing money isn't ideal as it will only affect the product long term.

Perfect, so you would agree that provided a club is paying its staff and players the basic Australian wage (at a minimum - and not made up "scholarship and cadet wages") they are indeed "professional"?

Over 100 years of history in this country tells us , that ain’t going to happen.

As long as the AFL and NRL heirachies are still influencing the majority of the population and governments, football looks to have reached its level of attendances.

Even if the NST gets up and we have promotion and relegation, it won’t influence the crowds we currently attract.

Yes , we will still attract big attendances for big games, but that is it.( Hope I am wrong )

In Australia mostly yes. A few other lower leagues too. But in a lot of leagues, clubs own their infrastructure. Even own their own marketing and merchandise production

I'm not discussing the definition of professional. I was discussing its long term viability.

Sure, at the top end of town at each league, maybe ... but we are nowhere NEAR the top end of town down here, it shouldn't be this way in a league where you can't get relegated and there is nothing really to aim for by winning anyway?

After 32 games only 3 have less than 4,000, with 5 games greater 20000. TBH though that shouldn't be the measure. If a second division team can survive with crowds of 3-4K then that is all that is needed. Anything on top is gravy. Equally, if ALM teams can't make money on current crowds then will they ever.

The beauty of NST is over time it will attract the best of the players not playing in the ALM. They will then be playing with and against each other and will raise the standard of those players. Whether those players go to ALM or OS clubs or continue to try to maintain other careers as well is up to them.

That will never happen in Australia. I think only one club actually own their ground in the NRL & AFL. Cronulla are that team.

The rugby league have been lobbying for years to build new grounds, with very little success.

They have got the new SFS, the new Parramatta stadium, and the new stadium in Townsville over the past few years.
