Expansion Thread

Not sure. Just saw snippets in articles from the time. The quote below was in The Age, 2003 I think.

Also can't believe that quote from the Knights below! That's actually a huge statement from them. Admirable.
I told you WE wanted expansion.... it could have been so much better :)

So Lowry is often the bogey man for people unhappy with oz foot all, but is the true bogeyman the pfa?

Opposed a 2nd tier at the start of the a league. Interesting jj has avoided the pfa in consultations about the nst

Oppose a domestic transfer system as it is incompatible with a salary cap

Enforce rules on how much players can go to schools to promote the club such that we apparently do it a lot less than other codes

Anything else?

Nah, every group is part of the problem. Every group behaves the same way. You can have X only if we can have Y. Well you can have Y only if we can have Z. It's one big circle and nothing gets done. Every group is both the cause and the symptom. All boils down to how the FA is structured.

Question for the a-league folks, how many times has this happened? (potential investor talk)
As Roar fan, way too many times. Now it seems that no one is interested in us. At one point we had Celtic, Red Bull, and a group from the US. Bakries turned them all down because they were not offering what they wanted. So they all walked away.

I'm keeping a keen eye on Wellington's home match in Christchurch today! Both wings look nearly sold out. Hopefully they crack 12,000.

This is held at the now 13 year old temporary stadium. It's hosts 18,600 seats and only cost less than $30m to build! It's criminal how much is spent on stadiums these days.

The Nix have played regular season matches in Christchurch four times before. The crowds then:
Old stadium - 19,279 and 14,108
Temp stadium - 9,671 and 8,545

Bumper crowd expected for Wellington Phoenix 'home' game in Christchurch

Under the agreement, the Phoenix will return to Christchurch in 2026 and 2027 when they hope to be playing at the new One New Zealand Te Kaha Stadium due to open in 2026.

Why does Christchurch have a new stadium?

Why does Christchurch have a new stadium?
Lancaster Park - the larger one was destroyed by the earthquake. Rugby League Park (this one) also had to have the stands demolished but was redone as a temporary stadium. The one being built now will cater for 30,000 for sport.

14,064 today. Excellent stuff. Shame about the result.

The new stadium will old 30,000. Might be a bit large for an A-League team. But could be doable if their own team can get 10k a match, much like Victory at AAMI these days.

that's impressive, but I want more australian based sides haha

Cross Christchurch off the list. This OFC Pro League will get announced and played before the NST does! Looks like an Aussie team might be included as well, they used the term "franchise" though, so where are they coming from?

Mentions Auckland and the Nix may enter a second string side. So could Christchurch use this as a stepping stone to the a-league? Build a following etc and then step up?

Yes and the mention of an Aussie side is intriguing.

They don’t seem interested because of the $25 million A-League joining fee.

Extra academies and a path to aussies playing in the club world cup....hope we have 3 or 4 playing in it

I don't think Christchurch will get anywhere near the support in this OFC comp as they would if entering the A-League. But good luck to them. Huge stadium to be playing in too.
