Canberra almost seems a lost cause with no one backing them. Pretty much Wollongong MKII.

They've had enough time. APL need to move on to the next bid. Can always welcome Canberra when they're ready, but they're just holding things up now.

can make more money with an open auction anyway rather than specifying the location

Forget Canberra, never gonna happen. Best bet is Christchurch NZ, better crowds better stadium and better players coming through the NZ football system.

On Christchurch. That temporary stadium they built after the earthquake, is that coming down when the new stadium is finished? Seems like a waste to do that. I can't believe how quickly that go that built, 12 months or something from no plans to earthquake to finished! Remarkable. And we can't get shit done here in Oz.

Temp stadium will be used only until the new stadium opens. There were talks of keeping it but it would cost the council to much money at rate payers expense.

The smartest investment in the A League is not a new club – it would be buying Brisbane Roar and realising its potential.

Second smartest investment, and the smartest for a new club, would be Gold Coast - large and rapidly growing population and a stadium already in place.

I would love Sth Melbourne to be included immediately but suspect that a fourth A League club for Melbourne is not on the table.

Any post suggesting Tasmania can be immediately disregarded.

South being 'let into' the league is a bit of a pipe dream, but I think gold coast could work? The problem with the current model (catchment area bs) is that once you have a couple of teams in one city you have to start looking at 'less popular' areas, witch in turn draws less of a crowd (I don't know why a-league fans are obsessed with crowd figures) .

Well, crowd figures are much less important than tv ratings, but both are crucial to the financial viability of the competition. Low crowds, as well as meaning less income, also have a negative spin off into the tv viewing experience, which then negatively impacts the ratings. It's a loop, unfortunately.

The anxiety re crowds is about the viability of the comp - I'm not sure many care how they compare to the other codes.

We will never make enough from crowds and TV - that's not how it works except at the elite level. It is all about other income streams. A lot of the NPL teams have sufficient to sustain them. The A League clubs don't.

I understand that, but my point remains.

A lot of clubs especially in NSW lose money on match days. If there is a large crowd the cost for police makes it hard to make a profit on ticket sales unless it is a sellout which makes larger crowds a bit of a problem. The flip side is that larger crowds make for a better spectacle and TV viewing and sponsors.

Remember that scene in Godfather ( one I think ) where the leave-the-cannoli guy is showing Al Pacino how to cook pork and beef in a pot for twenty guys.

Therefore I'm fine as a 100% Strayan attending Marconi and eating at their delicious trattoria.
Goodfellas wasn't that? When they were all in prison together?

Anyways, onto the Canberra talk - The time for Canberra was when Macarthur/Western United were added. FFA's non-inclusion of them then chased off the investors, and yet to have investors settle on Canberra just yet.

How did Macarthur get in? What were their actual selling points?

Non-effnik 3rd Syd-team - that’s literally it
Nothing to do with 'effnik'. Fox wanted another derby.

They said it's one of the fastest growing cities in Australia tarneit as well

The Macarthur/Camden region is a huge catchment area and growing and already has a alot of football participants around there. Problem is none of them give a flying fuck about the Rams because they completely and totally failed to connect with the grass roots.
