Green & Gold FC Podcast #3 – SMFC Mike & Pete

I'm just extremely wary of it all.

The old NSL was binned 21 years ago for a reason and here we are bringing back the same old problems the Crawford Report was initiated for in the first place.

We want the game to be united but it seems there are people who don't want it to be.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest would we be having this conversation if the Gallop administration hadn't got sucked in after that infamous shame file article written by the late Daily Telegraph sports journo Rebecca Wilson?

It seems like the game has gone backwards in a big way since then.

Up until that period the game had pretty much put itself as the major football code behind the NRL & AFL.

Since then there's been nothing but the same old infighting that has plagued the sport for decades.
why do you care? is your club part-taking in it at all?

the NSL was run to the ground and it needed a change, David Hill in my opinion killed it, that with the broadcast deals etc.

Football in Australia did need a change, but not the way the Lowy's did it, could of been handled better, and not leave the clubs to pretty much their own deaths. Luckily for us, we have managed to stay alive even through the dark times.

Now that a new competition is starting up, The Australian Championship, everyone is worried about uniting the game, the viability, why are we bringing back the dark old days and these ethnic clubs.

Here's the thing, your ilk never cared when we were in the state leagues for 20 years, the game wasnt united when we got kicked out, so why should it be united now.

The game will never be united, it will always be a us vs them mentality. You have your A-League & we'll have our clubs.

ofcourse the crawford report was going to kill the NSL.
We all know it was run badly, George run it too tight and was a c as they say, didn't want anything to change ran his way hence why Lowy pulled up stups with his Club and as mentioned Hill screwed up as well amongst other things..
Not rocket science there.
Doesn't mean the clubs have to be treated 20yrs later as such.
Sorry they are part of our football history and australian with ethnic backgrounds, repeat aussies and that is OUR country mixed nationalities.
Gallop wasn't going to improve the ride much better despite Wilson's attack on the game, the troubles occurred by the way without the NSL club's Shark might I add but the AL tribalism no diff what you are against of the past.
Even I never wanted to venture to parramata after 2 attempts with my family.
The AL had less franchise's back then and endured the honeymoon, it was never going to sustain those early numbers.
The NPL supporters are not part of the AL/lack of support infighting, the AL is its own owrst enemy and supporters who have caused probs to this day just as in the way back past.
Own it mate.

United ? more than anything its the AL side of the fence who don't want unity generally, as time has progressed the NPL Clubs don't need the AL to survive, it will carry on and hopefully the new competiton will improve looking ahead.
I really don't wish your Clubs being involved but for the greater good of the game ahead it should all be combined but I don't think your governace side will accept.
I think you guys (your AL) need us more than the NPL needs you in the end.

Tbh I think NSL bitters are happy for football to remain a backwater and are happy whenever the Socceroos lose.

Agreed. As time has gone on, the NPL clubs are fully functional and don't need the AL at all. Clubs are even surpassing the AL transfer system and sending there players straight overseas.
the fact this tournament will be running the same time as the AL is good, well see what the crowds are like for both. it has a super league feel to it lol.

B, I have no care to compare crowds come that time, lets face it they have far more commercial exposure than our part of the game.
I'm in the belief of - build it they will come, care only about us and lets see whats to become.
I know many many in my football circles will be attending local club games again - not old bitters as Shark tars it as but fellow aussie ethnic background playing mates of my 24/33yr old boys, heaps are looking forward to the season right now and once our comps finish here we go Championship series.

imo you are not on the pulse or ground amongst the local game ? I don't know but you are very negative..
I don't know 1 person who would wish our NT to lose, what frustrates many is the lack of improvement and rightly knock what has developed this situation.

Tbf for all the wankery people go on with about the old NSL, how many World Cups did we qualify for in the NSL era?

I'd tell you none, nada, zippo.

If it was that good we would've qualified for World Cups like we have in every edition since the A-League started.

The old NSL was a total binfire and bringing that crap back is a total mistake.

It was time to let sleeping dogs lie.

LOL at claiming the 2006 WC team was because of the A-League. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Seriously I really wonder your reason of debate.
I was a kid through those days And we were rank frigging semi pros in a far far backwater.
Am I not surprised we hardly made WC play offs, no.
I marvelled a kid/bloke from my local tin pot club made selection for the '74 squad.
Like WTF - how could anyone debate comparing our results to 06 onwards doesn't have an idea, sorry.
Our game only got going due to the bloody migrants for if it was relied upon the main anglo background of prior we never got anywhere as well.
Kudos to the many ethnics playing our game here setting the pathway despite the amount of abuse/racism and media against our game, the anglo media always hated "wogs" and our game period, a threat to their eggball codes and to this day.
Have you any idea of our history - the NSL messy backbone finally delivered and set the path of ongoing WC quali.
The Clubs are nothing like they were back in the NSL periods, the mix of people/types is what our country is today, bet you haven't even ventured to a NPL game nowadays.
The dogs have passed, its 2025 not 1999, move on mate seriously.

Did Kewell & Cahill play in the NSL did they?

Nope they didn't. Cahill went to England as a teenager as the idiot dinosaurs at Sydney Olympic said he was too small to make it at the top level.

Kewell went to Leeds while still in high school.

Yep I have been to many NPL games in the last decade and most of them are attended by two men and a dog usually.

Rather weird you have an anti-Anglo attitude when you have Liverpool as your username and avatar tbh.

So this was nothing like it was in the NSL era?

and which clubs and youth structure did they play for? lol FMD.

now proceed to name the rest of the 2006 squad and where they played?

keep clutching at straws.

you must be going to some very strange man and dog games in that case.
Even though we all know crowds are lacking I've never been to game with just the above.

Mate, I'm not going to add to the political perspective you present, that point was before the ethnics came here in numbers of the early 50's late '40's obviously we were very anglo dominated, no more no less that was/is just fact of our background heritage.

What are you waffling on about? I wasn't talking about the 1940's & 50's. I was born in the early 80's ffs.
