Green & Gold FC Podcast #3 – SMFC Mike & Pete

Newcastle Jets
nah mate - they were known as Newcastle KB United.
KB was a beer brand many young uns wouldn't have heard of.
They started in '77, '78 in the NSL, fell apart in '84.
While they often struggled to compete at the very top of the league Newcastle were regular mid table finishers and their only honour was in 1984 when they travelled to Melbourne Knights and won the national league cup 1–0, playing as the newly formed Newcastle Rosebud United. The goal was scored by Derek Todd.

KB United's NSL licence was taken over by Northern New South Wales State League club Adamstown Rosebuds in 1984 after the collapse of Newcastle KB United. Rosebuds renamed themselves Newcastle Rosebud United while they played in the NSL. They were excluded from the NSL at the end of the 1986 season when it was re-organised and returned to the NNSW League.

It would be another 5 years before Newcastle had another representative in the National Soccer League, this time via the newly formed Newcastle Breakers FC.

Tony Labozetta was the head honcho of Soccer Australia. He presided over lots of petty fiefdoms. TL had no interest in growing the game and simply wanted to preserve his status as head of Aus football.

He was the antithesis of his predecessors, Ian Knox and David Hill, who desperately wanted to grow the sport - like Lowy did. Ostensibly, there was a lot of corruption associated with him. The NSL either was close to bankruptcy, or went bankrupt under TL's tenure. He could see nothing wrong with what he was doing.

Socceroos sometimes didn't want to leave their clubs to play for the Socceroos, because the UEFA clubs didn't like it. Players' club careers were paramount over playing for the national team under TL's tenure.

Aussie domestic based players didn't like the younger European pros in the team, who were quite comparatively rich. As soon as Lowy came in, he was a good financial manager. He also employed John O'Neill, then Aus rugby union CEO. They laid down the law to every UEFA club who refused to release Socceroos - they ensured they were suspended from playing for their UEFA clubs. Conversely, TL was inactive over this issue.

There were more scenarios like Robertson and Volpato, choosing other countries, or refusing to play for Aus.
D, in a previous post you quoted and rightly so NSL had NO impact in Tas, plus I would assume many in Tas barring the football mad devotee's on 1 hand how do you know much of TL SA tenure ?
Purley from third hand goss from coaching clinics ?

By the way I question your quote Lowy growing the sport, he wanted to control it and run it like a wesfield get plenty of paying tennants.
Thats not football growth but out and out business and forget the rest for here we are.

Don’t know much about TL. Isn’t Sir Arthur George considered the major villain in Soccer Australia’s history?
he was probably the first leading villian originally, he stayed leader for too long (20yrs) that was the main prob and beat heads with all, even Rasic making the '74 WC he had issues with.
He was very pig headed in the end - hence Lowy digging his heals in.
Mind you he did alot of good originally but I think the power as usual got to his head.
Here's an old article but doesn't say enough.

This is an interesting read

Newcastle Jets were formed in 2000 and were called Newcastle United during the NSL years before adding Jets to their name when the AL started.

Newcastle United were formed around when breakers died (2000 ish). United then became Newcastle United Jets Football Club (yeah that's their full name).

1957 Hollandia-Inala > Brisbane Lions > Queensland Lions > Queensland Roar > Brisbane Roar
Brisbane Lions has not been in the NSL since the late 1980’s.

Tired eyes and glanced over the thread. Having a listen. These guys are nice to listen to. I was expecting some of the obnoxious attitudes which are either described by some with very stubborn positions on forums (not you, Mono *heart*) or that being how they are described by those who can't stand SMFC.

To clarify, are these the blokes who've blocked many from football reddit or have I not read properly? Just saying they sound good to chat to, plenty of yarns and clearly want to be involved in the sport but also have scars about how the game and system has panned out in this country.

Great work once again. I doubt Grazor and Pasquali need ideas for podcast topics but perhaps requests of questions to pose or areas to cover may be something further down the line.

Would/do they charge a fee? Hill, Slater, Bozza etc. Would be an absolute coup to get them for a little time.

That's a good idea we can solicit questions in the forum before hand

They are indeed firebrands on twitter and blocked a lot of people including our cohosts

Yeah people have a lot to say about how they conduct themselves online, however not one bit of criticism of their thoughts on this podcast. I was talking to @Monoethnic Social Club and he said it best himself "the more these conversation occur, the more chance everyone that loves football can realise we all, to some degree, really want the same thing...."

This'll come across as kinda hippy but there's something to be said about focussing on the things we have in common rather than the things that divide us. There's a need to find common ground and work from there.

Honestly, TL has never been mentioned in any coaching courses , or , even discussions in club football I've been associatedi with in Tas.

Lowy wanted football to run efficiently and competently.

Hey JS, I know I can be obnoxious sometimes... :P I guess it stems from a position of ALWAYS having to defend my club and our supporters.
Mike and Pete are both lovely guys, professionals in their respective fields, well spoke and above all passionate about Australian football. Not surprising at all that they have to block people on twitter as they are in effect, the poster boys, online, for everything that the new dawners love to attack...

That's the problem with the world we all need to just listen. I don't agree with everything they said but you just shut up and listen to someone's perspective. If I was in charge everyone would have to do it

Mike would have a lot to offer. But he loses all credibility wishing death to the A-League. Unproductive nonsense. Until that mentality changes then he's just another child on X. And crapping on marketing the Matildas, way to shoot ourselves in the foot if we cut that out.

We need people working together to bring the game together.

Guus, many of us wish death to the Aleagues.... (not the clubs themselves but the standalone league structure and the franchise agreement system) how is that losing credibility to state what your beliefs are? Do people on here that repeat ad nauseam that the NSL had to die because the effnik riots on the fields are so much more unpalatable than manistream riots off them lose all credibility?
