Summer of Cricket thread

Yep I'm 36 and have religiously watched every bit of cricket I can no matter who is playing for as long as I can remember. Played since I was 12 up until a few seasons ago. Don't think I'm 100% done with playing yet...
What level do you play, ODW?

Batter? Bowler?

Yeah for sure. In my experience, ive been around sports for a long time now and it seems to be a consistent trademark with our coaches in general. Ive noticed a significant lack of initiative, being overly conservative or too scared to move the chess pieces around when they need to. Rather than taking the required calculated risk, learning from the past and using their gut instinct to make the changes they know they should.
I know you and Richie are essentially cricket fans, but recent Socceroos coach, Tony Popovic, has made some fascinating selections in his short tenure - in key world cup qualifying matches. Some have really paid off too!

Whereas amongst the cricket community that I know in this state, most involved in Tas Cricket Members, many of us feel the Aus selectors have been ridiculously conservative.

It may have been the case with players pushing for McDonald as coach, and with Bailey as head selector, it has been far too comfortable for players out of form for sustained periods, and aged in their thirties, to have been kept in the team and not pulled their weight. The bowlers have often saved the team after some pretty poor collective batting performances.

I've heard from some who know him, that Marsh is a great team man. That he is very well-liked and good for team morale. Warner, Labu, Marsh, and now Usman, have been selected after sustained periods of failure though. Yet McSweeney was quickly axed, whilst aged only 25.

There has been a resurgence in South Aus cricket.

They now have Head and Carey in the Test team. McSweeney has been given a go too. Doggett has been in the Test squad. Hunt is putting up a case to be selected as opener.

They were bottom of the Shield for years.

I've been told that Gillespie was popular with South Aus players and pretty easy going, but not a great tactician. Assistant coach Neilson was intensely disliked. Dizzy was replaced by Ryan Harris, who has been much stricter and it is believed has value added to the team with much more canny game/team tactics. Late last season and this season, SA have been a much better side in Tasmania in the Shield.

George Bailey and his panel been doing practically the opposite. I call it 'jobs for the boys', a reluctance to move on guys they played with due to the friendships that were built during those years as team mates. Too scared, as you say, to hurt feelings. This type make poor coaches.
Well said!

Agree with every word.

Worrying aspect of that list DC is that only two are native SAussies, as SACA continues to prefer imports to the home grown product. I see the problem being lack of nurturing their juniors. If not mistaken there were no SAussies in the '24 Junior Ashes or U19 WC squads. Need to confirm this. But if the case, a sad indictment on SACA.

I thought Webster would be at 1st slip, not 3rd like they've put him. Can't believe they would play Usman at 1st who can be shaky?

Ponting just said Webster has as good a pair of hands as anybody in Aus.

Or shove Smith to 1st, Webster to 2nd slip?

NSW has so many good cricketers. Some will inevitably go to other states because only 11 can be selected for NSW.

There is a belief home grown players are keener to fight harder for the state team unit than imports - looking out for personal performance as paramount.
