A-league attendances 24/25

They never resonated with the Melbourne public. "Heart" is a bad joke and just because a team is owned is owned by the "City" group doesn't mean that they have any sort of identity. You need a point of difference and City don't provide that at all. It should have always been South Melbourne to be admitted.

It's a bit of an interesting situation. Heart branding was bad (colours were ok though). City branding is worse due to CFG baggage and the light blue is the worst possible colour choice for a club based in Victoria. Heart on field results were rubbish whereas City results have been very good. They did experience some crowd growth during that great run of consecutive premierships but they were also handing out copious amounts of free tickets. Free tickets have dried up in recent years and the numbers reflect that. They probably needed to keep the freebies flowing for the foreseeable future. Originally CFG wanted SFC but the Russian's weren't too keen on selling. In an alternative reality if CFG had bought SFC, I reckon Heart would have probably had better growth if they had kept the Heart branding and found an owner that was happy to open the old wallet but didn't have the CFG baggage. Either way it was always going to be a slow growth situation for a second team based in Melbourne. We were never going to see a WSW thing happen in Melbourne as MV were already massive.

It’s Not just about attendances , tv viewers/sponsorships/ ground availability comes into play to.

Yep, the TV numbers would be diabolical at the moment so again i don't think that's a factor.

Not all clubs are impacted by ground availability. It would also force some of the clubs that need their own stadiums into acting upon it. I.E City and Roar.

Disappointing.
It would be interesting to see attendance figure year on year for MCY vs Nix. My gut feel is that the attendance figure is about average for these games as there aren't that many Nix followers although the away bay was quite noisy and almost full.

I would add that CFG are not big on fan base engagement either. Also, the fact that Heart were based at Epping, then moved to Bundoora and are now at Casey. Like wondering minstrels. Also the reason why K Bos moved across to MVC.

I don't think the training ground matters all that much. They play at AAMI, so as far as the fans (and potential fans) are concerned, they are based at AAMI and always have been.

The game was at 5:00 on a Friday atrocious scheduling. But it's the same story for years I don't think Melbourne city fans can argue we're alright not bunch the ones that do go. Aami is definitely to big for us

Aami is definitely to big for us
Yep, when you look at Adelaide, they play at a 15k venue and usually have it about 65-70% full. If they were playing at a 30k stadium, there is no way they would be getting those kind of consistent numbers as the atmosphere just wouldn't be the same.

When I say tv numbers, I really mean the amount of people buying a paramount subscription for the a-league. And we don't know those numbers

Definitely AAMI is too big - and I suspect that it is too big for MVC for most games outside of the City, SFC and AU games. The advanatge that AAMI does have is that it is central and close to tram, bus and train station. Also, there is a nearby pub and food. I haven't been to Tarneit but I think that definitely means driving for me.
And the A-League ought to do better with their scheduling.
My original point was that even if the game had been scheduled for a Friday kick off of 7:30, the numbers may not have changed much. That is why looking at attendances over the years would determine whether things are worsening, static or improving.

I've taken a random year 2013-2014 and compared crowns to this season.

What is really noticeable is the huge drop off in BNE crowds (end of Ange era and too large a stadium?) and MVC (FA crackdown?). SFC and ADL have held up pretty well. MCI are down a bit (probably affected by smaller derby crowd because of MVC issues?). CCM are down but building off a low base after 5 or 6 lean years before their recent success and will probably end up at around 8,000 for the season. Glory had a good season in 2013-2014 and a poor one this year so their numbers are understandable. WSW also down markedly after their initial success and their Homebush sojourn.

It must be noted that this seasons figures are up around 21% on last season. 2013-2014 was probably the last real zenith so figures will look bad in comparison.

Thanks for that. I can't see BNE & PG improving these figures this season and it may take years to recover. I don't understand MVC's nor WSW's figures and that is a concern. The rest need to do better.

WSW is down to two factors. Disgruntled fans and poor on-field performance. Excluding the current season, if you look at total competition points earned over the course of their history they are pretty average/poor. From memory they have only got 10-20 more points than the Roar over the same period. In other words, they are very much a middle table team and have been for some time. They also haven't won any silverware for a considerable amount of time. Being a middle table club can be worse than being a bottom club. At least a bottom club gets the whole underdog status.

MV is a bit more nuanced and complicated. More a case of a bunch of tiny little issues rather than one or two big issues. Membership numbers are still very good though.

Heart/City average 7,262 at home against Wellington.

Here's a chart I put together for the Heart/City crowds at Swan St, excluding derbies (because Victory would account for 75%), finals, and COVID era. 12 match trendline included.

12 match trundling seems to show they might still be in decline

I'd like to say bakries out, but unless they are being bought out....can the apl afford to prop up a club at the moment?

Slow gradually growth is probably OK. 10 years of an average of 3 percent growth and you have a thriving league. Most of the growth is probably healing old wounds of the war on active support, gf decision and covid
